Those of us who are committed to justice are often deeply engaged in supporting others as we simultaneously work to eliminate policies and practices that create harm. But how do we care for ourselves in the process? In this class, we will explore practical strategies for creating interior spaciousness amidst the demands of activism and engaged planetary citizenship. We will learn theory and practices in decolonized self-care, with specific focus on approaches to well-being which draw from African American wisdom traditions. We will discuss the concepts of fierce compassion, discomfort resilience, and joyful grieving, including exploration of how to assess and alchemize socio-political grief. The class will offer tips for integrating mindful self-care into our justice endeavors. Participants will leave with tools to support well-being in both personal and professional realms as well as skills that are transferable to the populations they serve and support.

This class, designed for participants from all backgrounds, offers practices from African American wisdom traditions that support growth, healing, and liberation, including:

  • Practices with dialect and language;

  • Practices with literature and poetry;

  • Practices with musical genres such as Gospel, Hip-Hop, and the Blues;

  • Practices with dance and communicative kinesics (gesture and movement);

  • Practices with visual arts;

  • Practices with with the natural environment in ways that support joyful, mutual sustainability.
